Florida Library Association Goals & Ideas for 2007-08

  • As the new Florida Library Association President, I am sharing next year’s theme and some suggestions about things FLA and the Florida Library Community might accomplish this year. Please share your views and get involved with FLA, your state association!

    - “Celebrate the Leader in You!” - A theme that fits our time!- FLA Blog – Use it – it’s easy! http://www.flalib.blogspot.com/
- Make a Difference! – Successful association involvement is not a spectator activity. If each group leader and member focuses on moving things forward, there are no limits to what we can accomplish!
- 25 Big Ideas for FLA & the Florida Library Community
- Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio had a great idea with his “100 Ideas for Florida’s Future.” We'll borrow it! Look for news soon.
- Promote & Support Member Groups – Help groups thrive and succeed! A big indicator of FLA success is whether groups have activities in addition to those associated with the annual conference. Make something happen!
- Public Library Directors Group – This group was just established – let’s support it!
- Library 2.0 & Encouraging Social Networking - Help groups develop their potential as social environments for members. Use the e-mail lists, blog, Flickr, YouTube, etc.
- Encourage & Support the Next Generation of Library Leaders! - Young librarians and library workers are leading the library 2.0 explosion. Huge numbers of library administrators are retiring, creating opportunities and challenges for younger leaders.
- Conduct Regional Sessions or Events – Plans are in the works!
- Represent FLA in Local Events - Ask me (cparker@tblc.org), a member or officer to attend your event!
- Advocacy – Reach out to the Governor, the Florida Legislature, local government and media supporting libraries’ roles in:

- Reading for all ages
- Supporting Floridians as they use E-Government
- Florida’s economic engine

- Actively Support Intellectual Freedom – FLA has a proud tradition of active engagement to maintain!
- Support All Types of Libraries & Member Interests – Make sure they all have an inviting, hospitable, supportive environment in FLA.
- Promote Organizational Memberships – We saw a great increase in Organizational Memberships this year, but we need more. FLA, through the executive director and lobbyist, are doing public libraries' governmental affairs work. We cannot afford to do that without greater institutional support.
- What’s on Your List? – Join the conversation!

Thanks!

Charlie Parker
FLA President

I would like to see a green agenda. In light of environmental concerns, perhaps we can think of ways our libraries can partner with the surrounding communities to encourage recycling and conservation. With looming global warming and an energy crisis, perhaps we can pool our collective minds and research talents to offer some solutions!

These are good goals and issues. One thing to consider is how the FSU College of Information and USF School of Library and Information Science can help FLA and Florida libraries achieve these goals and inform the issues.
