The face of library advocacy: Paul Clark, Library Guy

The library community salutes Paul Clark for his dedication and his advocacy role in the restoration of State Aid to Libraries funds. Clark, systems librarian with the Wilderness Coast Public Libraries, has provided the face of library advocacy during the past two legislative sessions.

This year Paul spent days at the Florida Capitol, holding signs in suppport of State Aid funding for public libraries. At midnight on April 26 as funding was restored, Senator J.D. Alexander acknowledged that advocates could learn a lot from Paul's example.

Early in the 2010 legislative session, State Aid was eliminated entirely from the budgets of both the House and Senate. Throughout deliberations during March and April, Paul was at the Capitol. His presence was a reminder of the importance of libraries to the citizens of Florida.

When funding was nearly lost at the end of the 2009 session, Paul had signs and flyers made and went to the Capitol to ask legislators to support public libraries.

The St. Petersburg Times carried this story about Paul:

I did my part to keep our issue alive at the Capitol, but I truly thank the library community and the many patrons who told me of their efforts in writing and calling their legislators. Together, as a team we won a victory for the many patrons who rely on their libraries. Thanks to FLA for keeping the team informed as this session progressed. Take Care. Paul Clark
